Damage in Samoa after Tsunami caused by earthquake.

Damage in Samoa after tsunami (Source: Reuters)

Reuters

A tsunami following an earthquake in the Pacific Ocean has caused some deaths in Samoa, but there is no word of how many died.

The powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake struck in the Pacific off American Samoa.

Tony Manson, a TVNZ employee in Samoa, was on the beach when he felt the earthquake.

He saw waves breaking before the reef and the sea receding so ran for the hills.

Manson says it took only 30 seconds to get from beach chalets to hills before it completely devastated villages and locals are missing their family members.

He says a large fale was completely wiped out and it was a big construction made of concrete

Tvnz.co.nz spoke to local resident Ampe Roma who was in his office in Apia, Samoa when he felt the strong quake.

Roma says the quake lasted over five minutes then Apia was evacuated by police and people sent to higher ground inland.

Local reports say the wave that hit in Apia was 0.7 of a metre while the second, larger wave in Pago Pago was measured at 1.7 metres.

ONE News camerman Rico Tupai, who is in Apia, Samoa, says high waves have damaged houses and villages.

There are unconfirmed reports of people being killed or injured as the tsunami appears to have come up from the south side of the island.

Emergency evacuation procedures are in place and church bells are ringing as people head to higher ground.

The epicentre of the quake was located 190 km southwest of American Samoa. It struck at a depth of 33 km. An earthquake of this magnitude is capable of causing a tsunami.

The tsumani warning is in effect for New Zealand American Samoa, Samoa, Niue Island, the Wallis and Futuna Islands, the Tokelau atolls, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Kermadec Islands, the Baker and Howland Islands, Jarvis Island, French Polynesia and the Palmyra Islands, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Young artists celebrate success

Young artists celebrate success

UCOL Quay School of the Arts alumnus Ben Pearce has taken first place in the inaugural National Youth Art Awards.

Ben’s work Great Grandfather Clock was constructed in walnut, rata and puriri. It presents “a window into the idea about the connections that we make and construct around un-met ancestors.”

Ben Pearce’s work Great Grandfather Clock won first place in the inaugural National Youth Art Awards.

Ben completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Whanganui UCOL in 2003, majoring in sculpture.

Third year Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fine Arts student Amelia Hitchcock, was the winner of the runner up prize “best 2D art work”. Amelia’s piece entitled ONE BAD APPLE was purchased by an art enthusiast from Hamilton on the opening night of the awards exhibition.

ONE BAD APPLE by Amelia Hitchcock was placed second in the Best 2D art work category.

Ben and Amelia’s work was selected from 42 finalists who produced a range of paintings, prints, photographs, sculptures and installations in media ranging from paints and canvas to glass and packaging material.
The National Youth Art Awards were open to all New Zealand visual artists aged 15-27 years and was organised by the Waikato Society of the Arts, with a view to encouraging young artists to keep developing their skills.

Prizes include $2000 cash for first place and prizes worth $300 each for best 2D, best 3D and best use of repurposed materials.

It is Amelia’s second major art award success recently. Her artwork “New Zealand Pure” gained top honours in the Waiora - Arteries of Aotearoa Art.

Instigated by Intersect, a nationwide network of young leaders in sustainability, the art competition aimed to explore ideas around water and cultural diversity and was open to young artists between 18 – 25 years.

As my day has progressed, Iv watched my hair get done, looked at food, watched my mom mow the lawns and looked at a backlit tree.
The image of my mother as iv known all my life, she is a hard working Woman, she cooks, she cleans, she works a fulltime job, she comes home and tends to the garden. Her name is Manufou Mariner (nee Lemapu) She is my bestfriend, my shoulder to cry on, shes pretty much a superhero in my books. Turia: Whanganui decision great day for city

The decision by the New Zealand Geographic Board to restore the "h" to Wanganui makes today a "great day" for the city, says Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia.

Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws earlier labelled the geographic board's decision "racist".

Mr Laws made the comment on his talkback show this morning after commenting that the board's decision followed the views of the local Maori trust, Tupoho Whanau Trust.

But Mrs Turia welcomed the board's "historic" decision, which she believed righted a wrong which occurred many years ago.

She said she applauded the tangata whenua of Whanganui for their patience in "seeking justice".

"It is incredibly uplifting to look through the submissions and to see the strength of support from people right across New Zealand who sought to recognise the distinctive Maori heritage of Whanganui," Mrs Turia said.

"The challenge we will all face now, is the vital need to bring all the people of Whanganui together in understanding the significance of this decision."

Mr Laws said the council's referendum result clearly showed residents were against changing the name but the board seemed to have ignored the result.

He also said the majority of the public submissions were in favour of keeping the status-quo and the board had gone against that.

"Why have submissions at all?" Mr Laws asked.

However, Geographic Board of New Zealand chairman Don Grant said public submissions on the proposal were relatively evenly split, with 444 opposed, and 436 in support. Nine were neutral.

The Geographic Board's decision was unanimous and was released publicly this morning.

The Board's decision will now be referred to the Minister for Land Information, Maurice Williamson, who may confirm, modify or reject the decision. The Board will recommend to the Minister that a minimum 12 month transition period be applied. Both names could be used during the transition period.

Dr Grant said the board weighed up the community's views and long-term usage of Wanganui when making its decision.

It also looked at evidence of the use of the 'h' in early historical records, and the fact that the issue of spelling was one that began in the 1840s.

"In the end we could not overlook the fact that Wanganui is not correctly spelt and it is a Maori name that is of significant cultural importance," Dr Grant said.

He said if the Minister adopts the spelling change then official documents will have to be changed within 12 months. Most businesses can chose to ignore the change but those in the tourist industry publishing material for overseas visitors would have to include the 'h'.

"The Board wants to minimise the costs involved in a decision such as this, and believes the 12 month minimum transition period will ensure costs are kept down for those affected," Dr Grant said.

"We took careful note of the Wanganui District Council submission, the referendum conducted by the council in 2009, and the research of Dr Diana Beaglehole commissioned by the council," he said.

"Historical evidence has shown that early settlers clearly intended the name of the city to be derived from the Maori name for the river, and consistent modern usage of the language showed the spelling should be Whanganui, not Wanganui," Dr Grant said.

Public consultation on the proposed name change opened in May after the board's decision in March that there was a valid case to change the name. Submissions closed last month.

Iwi group Te Runanga o Tupoho had applied to the board to change the name to Whanganui on the grounds that Wanganui was a meaningless word.

However, Mr Laws argued the move was a needlessly provocative gesture and contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of Wanganui's residents.

A referendum subsequently held by the district council in May found 77 per cent of voters wanted the spelling to remain Wanganui, while 23 per cent wanted it changed to Whanganui.

A 2006 referendum also found the majority of residents preferred the status quo.

In 1991 the Geographic Board changed the spelling of Wanganui River to Whanganui River, while the district health board also adopted Whanganui.

downing "The Beasts of Northrend" 2009/9/15

I would like to publicly declare that I am Officially a World of Warcraft Addict.
I have played WoW for the last 4 years and I only play Horde.
I have a level 80 Blood Elf Priest who is specced for both Shadow PVE and Holy PVE.
I am officially annoyed that they gave "Blade of Tarasque " to a Warlock because it had HIT RATING!! and I really wanted that item! It was like my heart was racing when i saw what dropped off the boss!!! Like seriously! I was swearing my head off coz i was frustrated coz i didnt get it!
I find play WoW is almost like escaping reality, I play in a guild with 74 other ppl, and each person is as important as the next. So much to talk about! Im so excited about the expansion! AMG 2 NEW RACES! I often wonder if I'll ever reroll a new character. I dont think I will, dont really have the patience for it. So i have a Blood Elf Priest called Eviân on Kalecgos and I also have an Undead Warlock called Milz. Both I really enjoy playing. But atm Evi seems to be it for me. Im constantly taking screen shots of events and of different ppl in game, take pics of my toon running around, downing bosses, achieving great things. :D I cant think of what to write. Well I can, but I think the only thing that comes to mind is something Paradox would say "Fucking Coon, clear vent!!!"

Sakiko Nomura

"Taking pictures of naked people, Sakiko Nomura creates a story about life and time. Her outlook on nudity is far from the standard way of thinking… The beauty of their nudity emphasizes man’s helplessness towards the secret of life and time. Deprived of daily attributes – clothes or house facilities, they seem to be much lonelier in longing for something undefined, something that would enable them a real fulfilment."

Be prepared for the worst.

Reality strikes

Life is a lie
This world is a graveyard
My heart is buried
Hands of destruction
Sight is a crime
Thinking about you everyday
Totally greatful
At times I act hateful
Its too late to think
Divide the boys from men
The girls from Women
For all we are left with
Is the emptiness ahead.

Palagi 3

Palagi 3

2009

hmmm. Looking at this print I feel I have mixed feelings about it. The image of the deer, then the patterns of the Malu (Tattoo traditionally given to females in Samoa) on the deer's neck. Being Samoan and having researched about the Malu, I ask myself why is it on the deer? What relevence does this deer have with a Malu and why is it that she has associated Palagi with a deer?

Traditionally the Malu was recieved by females in Samoa as a sign of womanhood, acknowledging that they were ready to serve their families, to serve Samoa. Now day you see alot of females of Samoan origin recieve it without knowledge of its roots, and why its so important within Samoan Culture. But still, im left stumped as to why its on the deer.... Its like as soon as I saw the print I wasnt too sure whether to be insulted or to be rather amused. I feel more insulted than amused to be honest. What relevence does this deer have to the Malu? The more I think about the deer, the more I want print out this image and redraw over it, and give the Malu the respect it deserves. Maybe im blowing things out of my ass, but why a deer? Is it suppose to be Bambi? BAMBI??? What connection does Bambi have with the malu, or a palagi for that matter. Why is it on the neck? UGH too many questions to ask, why cant I get answers!!! Im going to stop questioning. Thank you Margaret for you Artwork :D

I go where the party takes me.

Was an awesome opening!
Equipped with my b/f, my cousins, my friends, some drinks, a trip to Palmerston North, DJ Maddy, some class mates. Was good.
Had a discussion with my b/f and his friends about some work they were questioning. They had asked if everyone in the art world takes photographs of two guys kissing or having eye sex, stated they felt scared for their lives if thats what the art world was all about. I had to giggle at the comments they were making. For starters, I reminded Jason about when I was life modelling, also reminded him of the nude self portraits I did when we first got together. Then I reminded him of the exhibition we saw up in Papakura Community Art Centre and all the walls were images of two males again, nude, kissing, and what not.
I sit here and wonder why the homophobic comments, maybe unsure of two males? same sex?
hmmmm.... I'll keep pondering.

No 2

A movie that is on Mila's television at the moment, she has rented it. It is a movie based on a elderly Fijian woman who wants a party. I haven't been concentrating on the movie to much, I have been playing the DS. Anyway none of the actors and actresses look Fijian which is very funny but they put in a lot of Fijian sayings and customs so that's how they play their parts of Fijians. Well the Old woman is bored, hates that there is nothing happening around her so she plans a party with family only. The movie is a bit blurry here for me but a couple of the old woman's grandchildren come over and she tells them she wants a pig for her a party. I remember her kicking out a "outsider" who was one of her grandchild's boyfriend. Yeah it wasn't a movie that caught my attention but it may catch others. Hopefully Mila might add a bit more to this maybe.

MESSAGE OVERLOAD

Message Overload
By Confused Artists.

This exhibition is a way of visually expressing communication. A group of artists from different cultural backgrounds and languages have come together to create a visual interpretation of what they consider important to the diverse complexity of human language.

The space is occupied by many strands of different coloured wool, all connecting to and with each other. This represents the complex links of communication. A single thread of communication can be easy to understand, but put them together with others and it can quickly become confusing and difficult to reach.

The beads are threaded onto the wool as a metaphor for people's thoughts, words and languages that are passing through the networks. The beads are the ideas we are searching for and trying to reach through all the other information in our way.

Viewers are welcome to find their own way through, which can be easy or near impossible. There is no natural beginning or end, the network has a fluid body of its own.

AAAAHHHH!!!!!

Hand in tomorrow have lots of stuff I should have put on here from my workbook or more from bits of napkins, newspaper, tissue and other non-book and stupid things. Seen about three cool shows and read some magazines that have been interesting also have been looking though some books. Well first up are the shows I've seen.

Friday 21st August (AAAHHHH!!! Thats ages ago!) was CHA-MING-DAR-LING gallery that was organized by Erica and Anney on Taupo Quay. It was set in a building that they and several others all work in. The gallery space was two hallways a main room and a dark cupboard space. I enjoyed the space because it wasnt a typical gallery and thats what made the work so great to look at, it was a relaxed gallery. It had many cool looking lamps to light up the whole space it also gave it a very homely sort of buzz and was totally a comfortable enviroment. The art work was a mix of work from different people that the two know. The works explored different medias and it was awesome to see the diversity. The two are planning future shows which is very good news.

The second show (which was also ages ago) was on Saturday 22nd of August. It was located in Palmeston (spelling?) North at the Thermostat gallery. The show was organised by Jo Russ whos work was also in the show and it included Camillia (Mila who does this blog) Afele, Spencer Hall, Rab Lewin, Jes-ci (happens to be my cousin) Singh-Nagra, Leigh Mitchel-Anyon, Rosalie Gwilliam and Mark Brimblecombe. The show was named I Go Where The Party Takes Us and it featured one work from each photographer. There was also work from a photographer named Sean Newman but he is not part of the group and there was also a video of different Wanganui parties from Graphic Design students . The group will also be exhibiting in October in Auckland which is really great for all them obviously. The photographs all represented different views of Wanganui each photographer is currently from Wanganui and the diversity among the photographers are shown in each work.

The third show was at the Federal Gallery by UCROL by the Second year sculpture students on the 2nd of September ( not so ages ago) and the shows name was Soup Kitchen. One of the works that stood out was Anneys safety pin lazy boy chair with a apparent full sack sitting on the chair and two more full sacks on the floor and hanging beside the chair. The reaction of people walking past and touching the sacks were funny because the sacks would move a bit and the comments people made were equally funny. At the end of the show Anney revealed what were in the sacks to the remaining bunch who were still there and it turned out to three people staying reasonably still for 1 1/2 hours. Another work that stood out was a hanging structure of a large beautiful flower. The colours were bright and it looked to be made out of kite like material I hope the maker of it will make many different ones to fill a room which would be visually pleasing. A work done by Brandon was another that was interesting. It was a video of Brandon cleaning the cupboard beside the screen showing the video and filling the room with what he calls his best art piece ever but we dont see him make it because of the way he filmed it and we dont get to see it in the cupboard because he locked it and we don't get to see him clear the cupboard out because he'll do it secretly. He got the idea from when Einstein died. Einstein died in the States and his last words were spoken in German to a nurse who didnt understand German. Another work was done by a person who I heard orginally made the piece for special needs students and of course when a work has a theme that relates to you, you are likely to understand and appreciate it a lot more. The piece was a spinning frame that had these tubes on it you spun the piece by the handle and it made funny noises there was also a box of noise making tubes on the ground and it was cool to see kids play with them. Interactive pieces are great for kids and adults alike makes you not get so bored. The last artwork I'll talk about is Viviens. It was a dark room where provided lasers and torches were taken into. There were two laser machines, jellyfish wall that lighted up when you stood on a pedal and a very cool ceramic looking city. Each piece could work on its own which is where the part of limited space for a gallery rant would come in if I really cared, but there was a bit of a case where less is more would of been better but the pieces were visually interesting and she did well.

Time for tiredness, anyway, on the 27th of the ages ago August pictures from I-D Magazine from Ben (sometimes known as Been) Johnson were sent to me on Slutbook (also known as Facebook). These pictures contain highly colourful and done up pictures of SpongeBob SquarePants. The magazine portrayed him as they would a movie star, musician, model or maybe a sports figure(?). It was interesting to see images not about ideal beauty and lifestyle even though SpongeBob looked highly fashionable I don't think many of his fellow cartoon stars would think he was the ideal beauty of Bikini Bottom. The pictures interested me because I work with a lot of magazine images in my art making. I could'nt read the article to well because of image size but it looks like the magazine had a interview with SpongeBob. Clowns. They was also a image that i found to be not my favorite but it was of SpongeBobs shoes and other fancy shoes around it and of a shoe with the Converse logo it wasnt that bad I suppose a bit. I was trying to put images on from Slutbook but i can't.

Another magazine I read through is one given to me by my dear parents. The Magazine is called Frieze and it is the November-December 2008 Issue 119 but i got it late March from them which is late in general but i havent given it a good look before August sometime. The Magazine has articles on Films, Books and Music as well as Art. It is filled with many many many ads which is most of the visual content the advertisments are of course on the different gallery shows which are all in Europe so its cool to know whats happening there even if the magazine is oldish. There is lots of writing in very small print that it is hard to read a whole article. The articles I half read were on a defunct magazine called FILE which had some fantastic imagery, a angry guy called Jean-Philippe Obu-Stevenson who is a curator who is angry at Sarah Thornton for not including him in her book Seven Days In The Art World so hes written a book called Don't You Know Who I Am? Actualizing Myself In The Art World and has published a preface in this magazine and an article on The John Peel Sessions of the band Magazine which when I first saw it I thought it was on John Peel himself, Dissapointment.

And last of all a great fun book called Art Game Book another little thing my dear parents have given me. The book starts with how to use it then it begins with Fauvism all the way to Indiscernible Art which then ends the book with where to look for art. The book is very colourful and has Who Painted Who, Guess The Artwork and How Much Does It Cost games along way while learning about different movements. It also has a pull up game that reveals quotes from different artists which is a fun read. Definitely a good book for people who need to learn more about modern art but its also good for a read just to remember useful artists you have forgotten then found then added in to you studio practise workbook.

So thats all my notes. Thank you and good night. From Prue. And its not nearly 4 when I posted it, its nearly 1 idiot blog.
